Popping round to see an elderly neighbour won’t only benefit them, but also you and your kids. Taking along some snacks like biscuits and cake, making them a brew, and listening to their stories could lead to a new friendship – and some education for your kids! It could help them understand more about older generations, and learn how different it was to be a child back in the day. Why not get the kids to ask them questions, like how much – if any – pocket money they received? Or what their favourite toy was? Having your kids’ cheerful faces around will surely put a smile on your neighbour’s, and having someone to talk to will make their day that much brighter.

While visiting that elderly neighbour, why not ask if they, or someone they know, could do with some help for their weekly shop? It’s a great way to introduce your kids to the idea of helping others, and explaining to them that not everyone is able to get out of the house easily to do tasks, like shopping. Have the kids help out by making sure you stick strictly to the list of items the person needs, and encourage them to think about sensible spending choices to stick within their budget.

See if your local community centre are taking part in the Big Help Out. There should be plenty of opportunities to volunteer, but something like helping at the tuck shop would be great for your kids. It might help them improve their numeracy by working out change, and get an even better understanding of selling and buying. Plus, it could help them develop their confidence by interacting with new people, and learning how to speak to customers!

You can help out your local community by helping keep the streets, parks, or beaches of your neighbourhood clean. If you are lucky enough to enjoy the extra bank holiday, why not turn a family walk into an opportunity to clean up the local area? To get the kids inspired, turn it into a friendly competition of parents vs kids, and see who can pick up the most litter by the end of the walk. The kids will be helping the local area and environment, all while having a blast!

While out on your litter picking adventure, you could have a conversation about what climate change can help kids understand about money.

There are a whole host of charities across the UK, from disability charities, children’s charities, to animal charities. Ask your kids what cause is most important to them, and see if they would be interested in raising money to support it. This could be through a sponsored walk or swim, or by selling baked treats around your neighbourhood to raise money!
