Here are plenty of low or no cost ways kids can show their appreciation that the parents and guardians in their lives might treasure more than gifts.
🎬 Movie night
The price of a couple of cinema tickets might be outside of most kids’ pocket money budget. However, if you have some family favourite DVDs or access to streaming services, kids can set up their very own movie night for their special person.
Have them pick out some options, write these down on some paper as ‘cinema listings’, and let the adult choose the film. Then, get settled down with snacks from the cupboards, or some cheap store bought popcorn or treats, to immerse yourselves in an at-home-cinema!
If the kids are movie-fanatics, why not talk to them about what movies can teach kids about money?
🧹 Tick off some to-dos
Sure, most of us wish the kids would do this more than as a one off – cleaning around the house can be more helpful than kids realise! But making a bigger effort on or around Father’s Day itself will 100% be a gift they’ll love.
Get the kids to help tidy around the house, or do other household tasks. From cleaning their room or tidying the kitchen, to hoovering the floors or walking the dog – there are plenty of ways for kids to show their appreciation through helping tick off some of the family to-dos. If you’d like some ideas, check out our list of appropriate chores for primary aged kids.
🧺 Picnic or BBQ
Dads really lucked out by having their day in June, when the weather is (usually) a bit sunnier than normal. If the weather is nice, a last minute kid-organised adventure into the garden to eat some sandwiches is sure to make their parent smile.
Get the kids to make up some sandwiches and snacks (with the aid of another family member, to avoid some wild concoctions), grab a blanket and head outside to enjoy their thoughtfulness. And, if the weather is really nice, why not have the kids help out with BBQing, by buttering buns, making coleslaw, or helping serve?
If the weather isn’t up to scratch however, they could sort a Father’s Day lunch for the family with their (best presented) sandwiches and crisps?
🎮 Gaming Night
Another fun idea could be for your kids to have a gaming night with their parent – this could be classics like Pac-Man, or the newer high-spec Fifa games. It doesn’t need to be video games, though! Even board games like Cluedo or Trivial Pursuit are sure to bring some joy to both parent and kids alike.
🥣 Breakfast in Bed
A staple of any special day, you can’t go wrong with some breakfast in bed! The kids don’t need to get the hob or oven fired up, as toast that’s spot on and a perfectly brewed cuppa will go a long way. If they’re feeling adventurous, they could head out to the shop to buy some pancakes or fruit pastries!
If they’re still in the helping mood post-Father’s Day, why not talk to them about helping others?
