Our ‘Rooster Heroes’ series brings you financial experts from all over the world, asking them 10 quick fire questions on all things pocket money and allowances – so you learn from the best. They’re all leaders in their field, and they’re all people we at RoosterMoney admire.

This month we spoke to Nadia Bentoua.

Nadia is a Project Manager at MyBnk, a UK financial education charity for young people. She helps design programmes helping 7-25 year olds learn to manage their money, in schools and youth organisations.

1. What’s your earliest money memory? 🍼

Putting coins in the NatWest Piggy Bank which was a pig wearing a nappy.

2. What did you want to be when you were a kid? 👶

A pirate!

“I will pay out on experiences I see as a must-have, however, I like to build up my savings and be cautious too.”

3. What's your favourite candy? 🍬

That’s easy, the strawberry BonBon. Very effective, even today!

4. Describe your money personality 🤔

I am a binge spender. I will pay out on experiences I see as a must-have, however, I like to build up my savings and be cautious too. That way I will always have money for the must-have experiences.

5. What's the best bit about your job? 💼

Helping people to learn and grow – it’s amazing! At the moment I’m working on a project called Money Mechanics, which teaches young people who are deaf or blind to learn to manage their money. It’s just started to roll out nationwide and is supported by the players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Translating the world of personal finance into their first language has been an unreal journey.

6. Do you give your kids an allowance? And if so, what's the system? 💰

I have a dog, does that count? I would definitely get my dog to do chores around the house if he needed pocket money! I’ll look into training for that, but that’ll cost!

7. Best piece of money advice you’ve ever been given? 🎓

There are no pockets in a shroud!

“I would definitely get my dog to do chores around the house if he needed pocket money!”

8. What’s your top tip for parents on teaching kids the value of money? 💡

Make sure the lesson answers the question ‘how will this benefit me?’ Sounds selfish but will get a 15-year-old’s attention.

9. How will we be paying for things in 2040? 🤖

By winking, thinking or giving a strange look. Can guarantee whatever it is it will be so easy so we spend more.

10. Bonus: Favourite app on your phone (apart from RoosterMoney of course!) 📲

Fun facts. Never ceases to amuse and inform. Plus, you get to sound like a clever clogs. For example, did you know that an octopus has 3 hearts?

“Learning about money doesn’t have to be boring or an info-dump.”

Anything else you’d like to add?

Learning about money doesn’t have to be boring or an info-dump. If you make it fun, engaging and relevant you can prompt behaviours, and behaviours can become lifelong habits.
