💰 6 Ways to Teach Kids About Money This September
In true RoosterMoney fashion, we’re back to give you more ways to bring money lessons into your everyday life. Here are some ways to teach kids about money this September!
1) Seasonal Supply & Demand 🗓 🍓 🍒
Seasonal veg is often cheaper so it can be a great way to introduce the topic of supply and demand.
Encourage your kids to research which fruits and vegetables are in season and hunt together for them next time you go out (or online) for a food shop!
You can explain to them that certain fruits and vegetables are cheaper as there’s more supply of it this time of year. When there is more supply of something, prices remain low or even start to fall because people won’t want to pay more for items that can be found easily. When it’s out of season, it’s harder to find, so people are willing to pay more. So you can eat fresh and save money at the same time!
2) Set a savings goal 🎯
Setting a goal gives your kids a reason to start saving!
Ask them what they really want to buy and discuss a goal that’s realistic. You can even get your kids to do the math…
📊 The Latest Pocket Money Index Results
We’ve released our latest Pocket Money Index (PMI) – a snapshot of the family pocket money economy.
Last quarter the average pocket money for 4-14 year olds stayed steady at £4.60, but the savings rate hit a record 43% which is great to see. We also saw an interesting shift in spending habits, with Roblox & Fortnite overtaking Books & Sweets for the first time since we started the PMI.
📚 Best Money Books for Kids
In celebration of National Literacy Month, here’s our RoosterMoney – 2020 refreshed – list of best money books for kids.
The way we see it, storytelling isn’t just for entertainment. It’s also a really effective way to teach complex subjects, like MONEY 💰
From saving for a new toy to dissecting bitcoin, we’ve found 8 entertaining and engaging books for your kids! These will act as great conversation starters for the whole family, touching on a broad range of money management topics from budgeting to entrepreneurship!
- All About Money 💰
By Margarita Brown, Isaac Joshua Brown, Anna Kidalova and Sarah Brown
This fun and practical workbook is packed with information all about…you guessed it – money! From helping your kids understand money, how people make it, how the government is involved, to taxes, and understanding what the economy is – this book covers it all.
It’s super interactive and as it’s designed to be a ‘do it yourself’ homeschool curriculum. It’s handy for parents who might be homeschooling their children due to the pandemic, but can also be used by parents to assist their kids to learn more about money (even if they are already back at school).
We especially love that it covers both past and current events – it encourages students to look into historic events such as the Great Depression to researching topics such as how Covid-19 is impacting our world today!
