It’s World Book Day on Thursday March 7th 📚. As kids dress up as their favourite characters and celebrate their favourite books, all of us at RoosterHQ thought it would be fun to reminisce on our favourite childhood books and share them with you!

Esther

FAVOURITE BOOK:
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Purchase it here.

How old were you when you read it?
12 (I think!)

What’s it about?
The boy who lived and (spoiler!) a big, scary doggo that turned out to be his godfather 🐺.

Anything else to add?
Does chocolate really help when you feel sick? 🤔  They gave that out like water every time someone wasn’t well!

Will

FAVOURITE BOOK:
Mossflower by Brian Jacques

Purchase it here.

How old were you when you read it?
Age 7 (maybe?)

What is it about?
Fantastical world where the animals are in charge ✨. Classic story of heroes and villains, swashbucklers and adventures. And talking badgers…

Anything else to add?
That your imagination can take you anywhere. Even to believing that Beetroot Crumble could taste good. I made my mum cook it …it wasn’t a triumph!

Beth

FAVOURITE BOOK:
The Sophie’s Adventures book series by Dick King-Smith (Sophie’s Snail, Sophie’s Tom etc.)

Purchase it here.

How old were you when you read it?
Seven-ish!

What is it about?
A girl called Sophie who loves animals and wants to grow up to be a farmer 👩‍🌾. She is told by adults around her that girls aren’t usually farmers as it’s very hard work, but she is very determined and ignores them. She also adopts most animals that she comes across.

Anything else to add?
When I read it I was the same age as the character and had very similar interests to her (and still do really!). I found it very relatable and loved reading about a strong, non “girly” girl who didn’t listen to the opinions of adults around her.

James

FAVOURITE BOOK:
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon

Purchase it here.

How old were you when you read it?
When I was a teenager – I can’t quite remember!

What is it about?
A murder mystery from an autistic 15 year old’s perspective 🕵️‍♂️

Anything else to add?
It was a bit too long ago now but it was really good!

Ben

FAVOURITE BOOK:
The Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton

Purchase it here.

How old were you when you read it?
Maybe seven?

What is it about?
A magical land in a tree and a guy called Moonface 🌝!

Anything else to add?
Trees are cool… climb them. You might find another world up there!

Belinda

FAVOURITE BOOK:
Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce

Purchase it here.

How old were you when you read it?
Around 10 – 11

What is it about?
It’s a fantasy novel set in medieval times. Alanna is a young girl who wants to become a knight but women aren’t allowed train or become one. So she hides her gender and identity and trains to be a page, squire, knight and so on.

Anything else to add?
It’s part of a wider series called ‘The song of the Lioness’. I must have read these books 3 or 4 times over! I loved seeing a strong female character bucking societal norms and going on to become the very first (spoiler alert) lady knight ⚔️!

Tim

FAVOURITE BOOK:
The Best of the Magic Roundabout Stories

Purchase it here.

How old were you when you read it?
Eight

What is it about?
A group of (talking) animals going on adventures in their daily lives.

Anything else to add?
I distinctly remember Brian the Snail 🐌!

Jon

FAVOURITE BOOK:
The BFG by Roald Dahl

Purchase it here.

How old were you when you read it?
Eleven-ish I think!

What is it about?
A Big Friendly Giant.

Anything else to add?
Snozcumbers 🥒!

Alexandra

FAVOURITE BOOK:
Fairytales by the Brothers Grimm

Purchase it here.

How old were you when you read it?
Between six and eight!

What is it about?
It’s a collection of fairytales and contained, along with the popular favourites, other titles., such as “The Story of the Youth Who Went Forth to Learn What Fear Was” 👻 – my personal favourite.

Anything else to add?
Looking back on it now, those stories were way too creepy for children!
